Unused Lexical Variable, Robert Blatt, guitar; Jeremy Jolley, guitar; John Teske, double bass; is an ensemble of composers/performers active in Seattle's new music community. ULV focuses on experimental sound, improvisatory performance and avant-garde composition. A typical concert may contain quiet classical guitars, filtered noise, spectral overtones, live computer processed sound, fragmented rhythms and silence. |
Robert Blatt is a composer, guitarist and improviser. He has written a variety of acoustic and electroacoustic music for solo, tape and chamber ensembles. Elements of time, timbre, form and memory play key roles in his musical thinking, with a current interest in the use of spectral analysis, algorithms and live computer processing. As an improviser, he works primarily with classical and electric guitars, which are commonly found in tandem with a diverse assortment of preparations and live electronic processing.
Jeremy Jolley is a Masters student in music composition at the University of Washington studying with Joël-François Durand. He has also studied composition with Tom Baker, guitar with Steven Novacek, and electronic music with Juan Pampin.
John Teske is a composer, improviser and double bassist living in Seattle. He received his BM in Music Composition from the University of Washington and studied acoustic and electroacoustic composition with Joël-François Durand, Juan Pampin, and Josh Parmenter. John is continually expanding his sound-palette on the double bass through extended-techniques and electronic processing.
Bassist Brian Cobb is an accomplished composer and educator. He has studied composition with Salvatore Macchia, John Bavicchi, Robert Stern, Dennis Leclaire, Juan Pampin, and Diane Thome. Through the years as a jazz musician he has toured Europe; recorded with jazz artists Ron Bosse, George Garzone, and Karl Rausch; and performed with Bob Guilotti, Bob Moses, Jeff Galindo, Max Vax, Teodross Avery, and Aaron Goldberg.
Chris Stover is one of the most sought-after performers in the Pacific Northwest. A trombonist and composer in a wide spectrum of styles (including jazz, Cuban and Brazilian music, modern chamber music, and free improvisation), he appears on over thirty recordings and has performed around the world.
Hugo Solis is currently a PhD student in DXARTS at the University of Washington. His main interests are musical structure of improvised music, human computer musical interaction, and audiovisual systems. Currently he works on the development of sonic and visual extensions for acoustic pianos and also plays with the Juum duet. He has collaborated in many interdisciplinary projects in conjunction with dancers, painters, film-makers and radio-artists. In recent years, Hugo has also created several multimedia works and installations. He has received grants from the FONCA, the PAEE-FONCA, the UNAM and TELMEX.
